COPENHAGEN, Denmark, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- Danish police said a man injured in an explosion is believed to have been building a letter bomb to send to a newspaper that printed Prophet Mohammad cartoons.
Investigators said Lors Dukayev, 24, who was born in Chechnya and has a current address in Belgium, had injuries to his face when he was arrested in a Copenhagen park shortly after the explosion at a nearby hotel, the BBC reported Friday.
Police said they now believe Dukayev was injured while creating a letter bomb he was allegedly planning to send to newspaper Jyllands-Posten as retribution for publishing cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad. Images of the prophet are banned by Islamic law.
Police spokesman Svend Foldager said the device Dukayev was creating would have had the explosive force of a hand grenade. He said the low-tech device contained TATP high explosive and ball bearings.
Dukayev pleaded not guilty Sept. 11 to firearms charges and putting lives at risk.
