SURIN, Thailand, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- More than 2,300 people in Thailand's Surin province are infected with dengue fever, and the illness is spreading across the country, officials say.
The illness has shown up in 17 districts in the province and one person was reported to have died from it, Surin Public Health officer, Dr. Sa-Ard Weeracharoen said Sunday in a Thailand government news release.

Most victims in the region are from 5 to 14 years of age.
In addition to fever, the illness causes bone and joint pain, and can be life-threatening. The illness is most widely spread through mosquito bites.
