Report: Yemen has huge education problem

SANAA, Yemen, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- About 1.4 million Yemeni children do not attend school and live under the threat of illiteracy, education officials said.

A report by Yemen's Supreme Council for Education Planning said attaining a basic education in the country has a long way to go, the SABA news agency said Monday.

Even students who do attend school are at risk, the report said.

The planning council said 80 percent of children between 6 and 14 drop out of school and almost 75 percent of those who stay must repeat classes.

The study recommended that Yemeni education officials do more to provide school for children in rural areas and to help enrolled students complete their education.

The report said Yemen should establish educational standards to ensure consistent teaching nationwide.
