VERKHNY VOLCHEK, Russia, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Nine people died Monday when they were overcome by smoke in a fire at a retirement home in western Russia's Tver region, authorities said.
A spokeswoman for the regional emergency services said a 10th person -- a woman -- was hospitalized in serious condition following the 5:05 a.m. blaze in Verkhny Volchek, the Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported.

It only took firefighters about 25 minutes to extinguish the fire.
About 480 people were evacuated from the building.
The cause of the blaze was being investigated.
