Poison gas sickens Afghan girls, teachers

KABUL, Afghanistan, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Dozens of high school girls and teachers at a high school in Kabul, Afghanistan, were sickened Wednesday by poison gas, medical officials said.

Asif Nang, a spokesman for the country's Education Ministry, said the incident is the ninth case involving the poisoning of school girls, CNN reported.

Kabir Amiri, a physician in Kabul, said 59 students and 14 teachers were feeling better after being brought to an area hospital.

"We don't have good equipment to verify the kind of gas that they were poisoned with, but we have taken their blood tests to send to Turkmenistan for verifying the type of gas (used)," Amiri said.

Xinhua, China's state-run news agency, said several students lost consciousness.

Previously, authorities blamed Taliban militants for similar gas attacks on girls schools in Kabul, Kunduz and Parwan provinces. When in power, Taliban leaders outlawed schools for girls and confined women to their houses.
