Woman disappears while saving man

LEAMINGTON, Ontario, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- A Canadian woman disappeared in Lake Erie Monday afternoon while trying to help another woman rescue a swimmer in distress, authorities said.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported the Calgary woman went under when she and the other woman used a raft to reach the swimmer in rough waters off Pelee Island southeast of Windsor, Ontario.

Provincial police in Essex County said the swimmer, a man from Bright, Ontario, was not injured. The man and women are related, police said.

Police marine vessels, the Canadian Coast Guard and private boats were searching for the woman, the CBC said.
