Militant leader killed in Russia

GROZNY, Russia, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- A Russian militant leader blew himself up with a grenade when he realized he would not be able to escape capture in a police operation, authorities say.

Khamzat Shamiley injured three police in a shootout at his home in Grozny before killing himself, RIA Novosti said Saturday.

Chechnya Interior Minister Ruslan Alkhanov said Shamiley blew himself up with the grenade after realizing he was trapped.

Earlier Saturday, police in nearby Dagestan killed another militant leader, Magomedali Vagabov, who was believed to be responsible for a suicide bombing in Moscow that killed 40 and injured 100 others, the report said.
