Milk from offspring of cloned cow sold?

LONDON, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- U.K. health officials are investigating reports that milk from the offspring of a cloned cow was being sold in Britain in an apparent breach of food laws.

A British farmer, in an anonymous interview, said he was selling milk from a cow descended from a cloned animal without labeling it as such or identifying its origins, The Daily Telegraph reported Monday.

He also said he is selling embryos from the same cow to breeders in Canada, the newspaper said.

Since 2007, the U.K. Food Standards Agency's interpretation of food laws has been that meat and products from clones and their offspring are considered novel foods and must be authorized before being sold to consumers.

Research has suggested strong consumer opposition to such food, and campaigners have called for an EU-wide ban on the sale of food that could be sourced back to clones, The Guardian reported.
