TAIYUAN, China, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- An explosion at one coal mine operation in China left 17 people dead and another mine flooded, leaving 24 miners trapped, officials said.
The Chinese news agency Xinhua reported 104 people were injured in the blast at the Liugou Coal Mine in northern China's Shanxi province Saturday. A senior official for Yangquan Coal Industry Co. said the explosion occurred in a dormitory area.
One miner told Xinhua miners' families were staying at the mine site because the children were on summer vacation. Officials had not disclosed how many women and children were among the casualties.
All of the injured, which included miners' family members were in stable condition.
The flooded mine was at Jixi City in northeastern China's Heilongjiang province, Xinhua said. City officials said the incident occurred about 5 p.m. Saturday. Details of the accident were unavailable.
