French police exhume bodies of newborns

VILLERS-AU-TERTRE, France, July 29 (UPI) -- A couple respected in their community were arrested after the bodies of eight newborn babies were found buried in a village in northern France, police said.

Officials in Villers-au-Tertre said remains of two infants were discovered in the yard of a house that once belonged to the parents of the woman arrested, Radio France Internationale reported Thursday. The new owners of the property made the grisly discovery while landscaping.

After the two bodies were determined to be human, police said their investigation led them to the home of the detained couple, where they exhumed six more bodies Tuesday and Wednesday.

A city official told RFI the couple were respected in the community. The husband worked in the building trades and the wife was a nursing assistant.
