BONNY, Nigeria, July 5 (UPI) -- Twelve sailors abducted in bloody confrontations last week with suspected pirates have been released, Nigerian officials said.
Gunmen shot and killed one seaman during attacks on two cargo vessels off the Nigerian coast Friday and the sailors were taken hostage, The Punch, a newspaper in Lagos, Nigeria, reported Sunday.

Lt. Col. Timothy Atinga, a spokesman for Nigeria's Joint Military Task Force, said the sailors, mainly European, were released Sunday and taken to Bonny, Nigeria.
