No bail for suspects in bank bombing

OTTAWA, June 19 (UPI) -- Three men suspected of a firebombing at a Royal Bank of Canada branch were denied bail Saturday during a court appearance in Ottawa.

At a news conference, Ottawa police said high-caliber ammunition was seized during the investigation, The Globe and Mail of Toronto reported. Police Chief Vern White described the .50-caliber and 7.62 mm bullets as "high-end sniper ammunition."

"I don't know anyone who owns .50-caliber ammunition, I have to tell you, I think there are only a few police services in the country who have access," White said.

The suspects, Claude Haridge, 50, an engineer; Roger Clement, 58, a retired federal government employee; and Matthew Morgan, 32. They are alleged members of the Fighting for Freedom Coalition and are suspected of an attack on the same bank branch in February with hammers.

White described the ammunition find as "alarming." A Group of Eight summit in Huntsville, Ontario, followed by a Group of 20 meeting in Toronto, will bring national leaders from around the world to the province.

Police said they have not determined whether to prosecute the suspects under the Anti-Terrorism Act. The federal attorney general would have to sign off on the law's use.
