War criminal's family wants him dead

BELGRADE, Serbia, June 16 (UPI) -- The family of former Bosnian Serb military leader Ratko Mladic is asking a court in Belgrade to declare Mladic is no longer alive, the family's attorney says.

Milos Saljic says no one has heard from Mladic in seven years and it is hard to believe the fugitive war criminal is still alive because he suffered from a number of illnesses, the Serbian news organization B92 reported Wednesday.

Saljic says Mladic, 67, had heart trouble as well as ulcers and prostate problems.

"When we are dealing with a person in such poor health, who has not been able to use medical services for many years, it is normal to expect that he is no longer alive," Saljic says.

Mladic was indicted by the Hague Tribunal for war crimes and genocide.

In order to pronounce someone legally deceased, they have to be over the age of 70 and missing for more than five years.
