Mountainside landslide kills 23 in China

BEIJING, June 15 (UPI) -- A rain-triggered landslide along a mountainside killed 23 workers at a hydroelectric plant construction site Tuesday in southwest China, officials said.

Officials said rescue crews were able to free 34 workers trapped in work sheds at the site in Pengta, Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan province, China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported. Seven workers were injured.

A preliminary investigation indicates the mountainside collapse was triggered by recent heavy rains that battered the region, officials said.
