Man charged with killing two cats

DEER LAKE, Newfoundland, June 12 (UPI) -- A Newfoundland man was arrested after he made good on a threat to kill his common-law wife's two cats, Canadian police said.

Mounties told CBC News they found one cat dead and the other fatally injured when they arrived at the couple's home in Deer Lake Thursday night to investigate the alleged threat.

"Apparently, this individual contacted her at her place of work and told her that when she (came) home, her cats would be dead," said Sgt. Jacques Morneau.

Morneau said the animals had been beaten or stomped.

The suspect, whose name was not released but was described as well known to the authorities in the Deer Lake area, was later arrested and charged with two counts of animal cruelty as well as assault and making threats.
