TEMBISA, South Africa, June 7 (UPI) -- Fans and police officers suffered minor injuries during stampedes before and during a soccer match between Nigeria and North Korea in Nigeria, officials said.
Thousands of soccer fans waiting outside the Makhulong stadium in Tembisa rushed the gates to gain entry into the stadium for the match Sunday, PM News reported Monday. Play later was interrupted when Nigerian fans poured onto the field to cheer their team.
Officials allowed play to resume when they determined the fans didn't interfere with the play, PM News reported.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria defeated North Korea 3-1. The Super Eagles will play their opening match of the World Cup against Argentina Saturday.
