TORONTO, June 1 (UPI) -- Chris Haney, co-creator of the board game Trivial Pursuit, died in a Toronto hospital following a long illness, his business partners said. He was 59.
Haney was photo editor at the Montreal Gazette when he and fellow journalist Scott Abbott invented the popular quiz game in 1979, Canwest News Service reported.
The two journalists scrawled out a rough framework of the game on paper in approximately 1 hour.
More than 20 million copies of the Trivial Pursuit have been sold in North America. In recent years themed versions of the game have appeared.
Photographer John Mahoney, who worked under Haney at the Gazette, said he was a man who never wanted to work 9-to-5.
"He believed the best education was travel and invented Trivial Pursuit with the hope it would bring in enough money every year that he could live on the beach in Spain and travel through Europe," Mahoney said.
