ST. JEAN SUR RICHELIEU, Quebec, May 31 (UPI) -- Three people have been arrested in the drowning death of a 24-old-man in St. Jean sur Richelieu, Quebec, police in Canada said.
Michael Meunier died early Sunday after jumping from a bridge into the Chambly Canal to escape attackers who had pepper-sprayed him as he rode his bike through a park, Surete du Quebec Sgt. Claude Denis said.
"The victim panicked and took off on foot," Denis said. "He veered to the right of (a nearby) bridge and jumped into the water to try to swim to the other side, but he got into trouble."
Two adult males and one underage male were arrested on charges of involuntary manslaughter, The Montreal Gazette reported Monday. Police did not identify the three suspects or release a motive for the attack.
One of the adult men jumped in the canal to try and help Meunier, but failed, Denis said.
Meunier's body was recovered from the canal several hours later.
