Mass grave found near Serbia-Kosovo border

BELGRADE, Serbia, May 10 (UPI) -- Serbia has deployed investigators to a mass grave believed to contain the bodies of about 250 Kosovo Albanians, officials said.

The grave was discovered in the town of Raska near Serbia's border with Kosovo, the BBC reported Monday. Investigators unsuccessfully searched the area for a mass grave two years ago.

Serbian officials said they believe the victims were killed in1998-99 when Serbian forces fought ethnic Albanian rebels in Kosovo.

Serbia's war crimes prosecutor's office said exhumations could begin in several days.

In 1999, Serbia pulled its forces from Kosovo, a province at the time, after a NATO bombing campaign, and the area was placed under U.N. control. Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia in 2008.

An estimated 1,200 people involved in the conflict are still missing, the British broadcaster said.
