STOCKHOLM, Sweden, April 30 (UPI) -- A growing number of Swedes would like to see the abolition of the country's monarchy in preference for an elected head of state, a poll indicates.
While 58 percent of respondents to a Novus Opinion report support the retention of the monarchy, support for abolition has more than doubled in the past 10 years, The Local reported Friday.
Of those interviewed, 28 percent say they want the end of the ruling House of Bernadotte, more than twice the 12 percent recorded 10 years ago, The Local said.
"The fact that more people want to see the head of state chosen democratically than by inheritance clearly shows that the Swedish people consider our constitution to be outmoded and undemocratic," Mona Abou-Jeib Broshammar of the Swedish Republican Association, which wants a democratic form of government in Sweden, said in a statement.
The poll indicates public and media debate on the question cannot assume the Swedish people love their monarchy, Broshammar said.
A total of 1,000 people over age 16 were interviewed for the poll from April 15-20, The Local reported. No margin of error was given.
