6.9-magnitude earthquake rocks Taiwan

TAIPEI, Taiwan, April 26 (UPI) -- A strong earthquake shook southeastern Taiwan Monday but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the 6.9-magnitude quake struck just before 11 a.m. off the southeastern Taiwan coast, 152 miles south of Japan's Ryukyu Islands and 167 miles east of T'ai-tung, Taiwan.

Taiwan's Central News Agency, quoting the Central Weather Bureau's Seismology Center, said the earthquake was located near Orchid Island.

The quake was felt in the Taipei, the capital, where buildings shook.
