"Based on all available data, a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no threat to Hawaii," the National Weather Service's Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

Yula Jeffrey, a worker at the Solomon Kitano Mendana Hotel in the Solomon Islands capital of Honiara, told CNN the quake was powerful but the streets were calm. Jeffrey said the hotel suffered no damage.
