French factory fire kills one, injures 12

GENNEVILLIERS, France, April 7 (UPI) -- A fire at a factory near Paris Wednesday killed a security guard and injured 12 people, most of them police officers and firefighters, authorities said.

The fire at the electrical component factory was followed by an explosion as firefighters were attacking the blaze and police were evacuating workers from the scene, Radio France Internationale reported.

At least three of the injured were reported in critical condition.

The fire broke out in one of the high-temperature ovens of the company, owned by Carbone Lorraine, in the Paris suburb of Gennevilliers.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, said French Interior Minister Brice Hortefeux, who visited the scene. The investigation would examine whether any safety procedures were breached, Hortefeux said.
