Brit couple lose appeal in kissing case

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, April 4 (UPI) -- A British couple convicted of kissing in public in the United Arab Emirates lost their appeal to avoid jail time Sunday, court officials say.

Gulf News reported Dubai Appeals Court Judge Aysar Fouad upheld last month's convictions, meaning Charlotte Lewis, a 25-year-old British woman who had been visiting the Middle East country, and Ayman Najafi, a 24-year-old British man who worked there, are to be incarcerated for a month and pay a fine before being deported.

The couple, who had admitted having been drinking but denied kissing and touching at a restaurant last November as an Emirati woman had told police, maintain there only had been "a peck on the cheek."

They were conferring with their attorney to determine whether they would appeal their case further, Gulf News said.
