British court halts rail strike

LONDON, April 2 (UPI) -- A British High Court justice issued an injunction on behalf of Network Rail to avoid a planned strike by nearly 6,000 workers nationwide.

The strike, planned by Rail Maritime and Transport union, was planned to involve a walkout by 5,800 signal workers and had been expected to last for four days, The Daily Telegraph reported Friday.

High Court Justice Victoria Sharp granted the injunction, preventing Britain's first national rail strike since 1994, after Network Rail argued there had been irregularities in the union's vote to go ahead with the strike.

Union officials said they are planning to hold a new vote in the near future, but train service will continue uninterrupted next week.
