Babies' bodies traced to Chinese hospital

JINING CITY, China, March 31 (UPI) -- The bodies of 21 fetuses and infants found under a bridge in China have been traced to the hospital run by Jining Medical University, authorities said.

The bodies were discovered Monday under a bridge spanning the Guangfu River in Jining City.

Eight of the bodies had labels attached to their feet that were traced to the university's Affiliated Hospital, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported Wednesday.

The bodies allegedly were dumped by two hospital mortuary workers, Zhu Zhenyu and Wang Zhijun, who were fired Tuesday after they were detained by police, Gong Zhenhua, a city spokesman, told Xinhua.

Some of the bodies, which have been cremated, were fetuses from abortions, while others were babies who were treated at the hospital and died, the news agency said.

Two senior hospital officials also were fired and the hospital's vice president, Niu Haifeng, suspended, Gong said.

The case exposed a "serious loophole in the hospital's management," Gong said.
