Bodies of 21 babies found under bridge

JINING, China, March 30 (UPI) -- The bodies of 21 infants found Tuesday under a bridge in China's Shandong Province likely were dumped by hospitals as medical waste, authorities said.

Eight of the bodies found in Jining City had labels attached to their feet saying they had been treated and declared dead, China Daily reported.

The labels contained names and information on weight and height but no information on where the bodies had come from.

No information was found on the other 13 bodies, police said.

Health officials said the bodies likely were dumped under the bridge as medical waste after the infants died from disease or abortion.

The decomposing bodies were found near a river, but had not contaminated the water as some residents feared, authorities said.
