India successfully tests three missiles

NEW DELHI, March 29 (UPI) -- India has successfully tested three separate missiles, including the 435-mile range, nuclear-capable Agni-I, defense officials said.

A medium range surface-to-surface Agni-I ballistic missile tested Sunday from a mobile launcher at an island in the Bay of Bengal followed the firings of ship-based Dhanush and Prithvi-II the previous day, The Hindu reported.

The 46-foot tall Agni-I, part of India's nuclear deterrence program, was described as a single stage, solid-propelled weapon system that can carry a payload of 1,000 kilograms or 2,200 pounds.

The report quoted India's Defense Research and Development Organization as saying the missile's specialized navigation and guidance system enables it to reach the target with a high degree of accuracy after a 500-second flight duration.

Defense officials said the Dhanush and the surface-to-surface Prithvi-II achieved their full range and conformed to the mission's parameters.
