VLADIVOSTOK, Russia, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- No one was injured when Russian border guards fired warning shots at two Japanese fishing boats in Russian waters, authorities in Vladivostok said.
The shots were fired from Russian security aircraft after the two boats refused to stop Friday for inspection off the coast of Kunashir Island in the Southern Kurils, ITAR-Tass reported Saturday.
The fishing boats temporarily halted, but then left Russian territory and sailed to the Japanese port of Rausu, Russian security officials said.
Russian security officials planned to pursue the incident with the Japanese through diplomatic channels.
Kunashir Island is the southernmost island of the Kuril Islands, which are controlled by Russia but claimed by Japan in a decades-old territorial dispute.
