Police arrest 2 suspects in rape of girl

NEW DELHI, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- Indian police arrested two men Friday suspected of raping a 9-year-old Russian girl visiting the coastal state of Goa with her family.

Aman Bharadwaj, 21, who allegedly committed the sexual assault, was arrested in Mumbai, the Hindustan Times reported. Anil Raghuvanshi, 27, who allegedly facilitated the attack by distracting the victim's mother, was picked up in Panaji, the state capital of Goa.

"The Goa police told us they would be coming to Mumbai to arrest Bhardwaj," Assistant Police Commissioner Ritesh Kumar said of the Mumbai arrest. "They had information he would be traveling through the area."

Goa, India's smallest state, is a former Portuguese colony on the west coast. Its beach resorts are popular with tourists.

In 2008, a British teenager was found dead after an alleged rape and two men held in the case were later released on bail, the BBC reported.

Both suspects work for a pharmaceutical company, the Times reported. Raghuvanshi agreed to surrender after police obtained his cellphone number and called him, investigators said.
