Conjoined twins in Ireland leave hospital

CORK, Ireland, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- Conjoined twins born before Christmas have left the Irish hospital where they'd been receiving treatment and were headed for home, officials said.

Mother Angie Benhaffa and her Algerian-born husband Azzedine posed for pictures with tiny twins Hassan and Hussein before leaving for their home in east Cork, The Irish Times reported Friday.

"We very much appreciate the positive response to our request for privacy from the media and the public, but we also know that there is genuine interest in the progress of our 'two little fighters,'" the parents said in a statement.

The twins were born at University College Hospital in London but were moved to Cork University Maternity Hospital in late December, the Times reported.

The twins are joined at the chest but reportedly do not share any vital organs, making separation possible.

They are scheduled to return to London in a few months for separation surgery at Great Ormand Street Hospital, the Times said.
