Serbia readies Croatia war crimes suit

BELGRADE, Serbia, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- Serbia is preparing to file a genocide countersuit against Croatia at the International Court of Justice, sources say.

Citing unnamed sources, the Serbian news Web site B92 reported Monday that the suit, which accuses Croatia of war crimes against its Serb minority population during the Balkans War of the 1990s, will be submitted by Serbia's legal representative Sasa Obradovic.

The countersuit comes more than a decade after Croatia filed genocide charges against Serbia at the tribunal in The Hague immediately after the 1999 NATO bombing of the then-Yugoslavia. It reportedly calls for Belgrade to punish all war criminals and return cultural property to Croatia.

B92 said the Serbian countersuit cites alleged war crimes committed against Croatian Serbs in Gospic, Sisak, Pakracka Poljana, Karlovac, Osijek, Paulin Dvor and Medacki Dzep, as well as during the so-called Operation Storm.
