4 suspended for drug lord slaying photos

MEXICO CITY, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Four Mexican state employees have been suspended in connection with controversial photos taken of a slain reputed drug lord, an official source says.

Citing an unnamed state prosecutor's office official, U.S. broadcaster CNN said a medical examiner and three employees were suspended in the incident, in which slain Mexican drug cartel kingpin Arturo Beltran Leyva was photographed after his shooting death with his pants pulled down and his body covered in bloody $100 bills and Mexican bank notes.

Beltran Leyva was killed by Mexican marines in a Dec. 16 shootout at a condominium in Cuernavaca. The publication of the photos sparked outrage among some Mexicans who said they mimicked the gruesome tactics of drug traffickers and altered a crime scene.

CNN quoted the official as saying the four government employees will remain on suspension until an investigation is done, adding that two forensic photographers who were not suspended are also part of the inquiry.
