Serbian president: Go slow on Croatia suit

BELGRADE, Serbia, Dec. 25 (UPI) -- Serbian President Boris Tadic said he hopes Croatia will withdraw a genocide lawsuit filed 10 years ago in the International Court of Criminal Justice.

The president said Thursday Serbia should not rush to file a countersuit charging Croatia with genocide against ethnic Serbs in the civil wars that followed the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s, the Serbian broadcaster B92 reported.

"In my opinion it would have been better if Croatia did not file the suit against Serbia and if Serbia did not have to respond with a countersuit, and if issues regarding the civil rights of both Croat and Serb citizens could be solved in processes which did not have such deep implications to our inter/state and international relations," he said.

Milorad Pupovac, the leader of the Croatian Independent Democratic Serb Party said he has already suggested Croatia consider dropping its suit. During a visit to Belgrade, Pupovac said Serbs living in Croatia do not need a debate about genocide.
