Fishing boat sinks, 3 rescued, 1 missing

YARMOUTH, Nova Scotia, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- The search for a missing Canadian fishing boat captain resumed early Thursday off western Nova Scotia after his boat took on water and sank a day earlier.

Three crewmembers were rescued from a lifeboat Wednesday after coast guard and military ships and aircraft responded to an emergency signal from the 50-foot Pubnico Explorer, The (Halifax) Chronicle-Herald reported.

The crew said the 30-year-old wood-hulled boat began taking on water that pumps couldn't keep up with and the ship rolled over and sank 20 miles northwest of Yarmouth.

The ship's captain, David Trask, was reportedly wearing a thermal flotation survival suit, but searchers hadn't located him in seas as high as 18 feet, the report said.

Waves and heavy snow flurries hampered search efforts that ran into the evening with crews wearing night vision goggles, officials said.
