Man admits grabbing Muslim woman's scarf

LEICESTER, England, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- A British man who ripped a Muslim woman's headscarf off while he was drunk has been ordered to pay her compensation.

In addition to the payment, a magistrates court in Leicester also gave Stephen Ard, 29, a 16-week jail sentence Monday but suspended it, the Daily Mail reported. He was allowed to leave after he wrote a letter of apology to Rehana Sidat and was told to pay compensation set at 1,000 pounds ($1,600).

Ard, who said he had been drinking, pleaded guilty to religiously aggravated assault. In his letter, Ard said he was "ashamed and embarrassed" by the attack.

Sidat said the assault occurred in October as she walked to work at a drop-in center for people with learning disabilities.

"It was only when he got a bit nearer and a bit too close that I tried to move away. It was then that he pulled my veil off and said: 'Get that off,' " she told the court. "He was angry, so it was really quite shocking. He kept walking, so I said: 'How dare you?' He stopped, turned around and said: 'I do dare.' "
