Dominican offers Zelaya-Lobo meeting

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- Dominican Republic President Leonel Fernandez says he has offered to broker a meeting between ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya and his successor.

An assistant to Zelaya told CNN the former Honduran leader, who remains holed up in the Brazilian Embassy in Tegucigalpa, is grateful for Fernanzdez's offer, but an unnamed source from within Honduras's interim government told the U.S. broadcaster Zelaya is unlikely to leave the embassy to meet with elected President Porfirio "Pepe" Lobo.

CNN reported Saturday Zelaya has indicated he would not seek political asylum from Honduras because he considers himself its legitimate president.

"Unless he leaves on a flying saucer, Zelaya is not going anywhere," the source said. "The only legal way for him to leave the country is under the condition of political asylum."

Zelaya, who was ousted in a June 28 coup, has been at the Brazilian Embassy since returning to his country in September.
