Italian demonstrations result in injuries

ROME, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- A demonstration in Italy against proposed reforms resulted in 10 students being hurt in Rome Friday, protest organizers said.

Student organizer Francesco Brancaccio said among those injured during clashes with police in the Italian capital was a student struck in the face with a nightstick and a student with a broken hand, the Italian news agency ANSA reported.

At least four police officers and 10 demonstrators were hurt in Turin, Italy, in a similar protest.

The injuries took place when demonstrators attempted to reach the Turin headquarters for the People of Freedom party, whose leader is Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

The demonstrations were protesting education and public employment reforms such as proposed spending cuts intended to bring about private investment in university-based research.

Italian Education Minister Mariastella Gelmini suggested many of the students were likely misinformed about the reforms' intent, ANSA reported.

"It pains me to see anarchists and radicals at the head of these supposedly student demonstrations,'' Gelmini said Friday.
