Canadian manhunt for escapee ends

HAMILTON, Ontario, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- A three-day search for an inmate and two men who helped him escape from a hospital visit in Hamilton, Ontario, ended based on a citizen's tip, police said.

At a Friday night news conference, Superintendent Bill Stewart said Fawad Nouri, 25, was apprehended earlier in the day without incident.

Nouri was being escorted from a hospital visit back to jail Tuesday morning when two masked men jumped the guards and fled with him, the Hamilton Spectator said.

One of the two suspected accomplices was arrested Thursday night and then Friday, based on a citizen's tip, the second suspect and Nouri were arrested, the report said.

Nouri was taken to the hospital for a follow-up check on a bullet wound to his arm he sustained in January during a foot chase and gun battle with police following an armed robbery of a Tim Hortons restaurant.

His escape raised questions as to how the other two men knew where he would be, as inmates aren't told when their medical appointments are booked, or where.

Detective Sgt. Dave Beech said police "have a good idea" on how the information got out, but would not elaborate, the Spectator said.
