Vandals smash Gingerbread City

BERGEN, Norway, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- The citizens of Bergen, Norway, are vowing to rebuild their traditional Gingerbread City after it was smashed by vandals, officials said.

An estimated 2,000 people helped craft the miniature city Saturday, building nearly 1,300 structures in a holiday tradition that began in 1991 when Bergen decided to build the world's largest gingerbread city.

Hours after this year's colorful city was finished, an unidentified number of vandals destroyed it, NRK Radio reported Monday.

"Here many have worked hard to make this a positive happening for the children and the citizens of Bergen," Mayor Gunnar Bakke said. "I am shocked that it is possible to do something like this.

The police were asking the public's help in identifying the vandals and a Bergen businessman offered a reward for an arrest and conviction.

Many volunteers and professional bakers reportedly had begun making new gingerbread houses on Sunday, leading Bakke to say it was possible the city would be rebuilt.
