PESHAWAR, Pakistan, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- The Pakistani director of public relations at the Iranian consulate in Peshawar was ambushed and shot dead on his way to work Thursday, police said.

Abul Hassan Jafari died as he was being transported to a hospital, the Iranian news agency Press TV reported.

Two men on a motorcycle carried out the killing, Abbas-Ali Abdollahi, the Iranian consul general, said. They got away after shooting Jafari.

Abdollahi called the attack "a plot by the enemies of Iran and Pakistan" and said it was done to increase tensions between the countries.

Last month, several officers in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard died in a suicide bombing that killed at least 42 people near the Pakistani border. The Iranian government, which said a rebel group, Jundallah, was behind the attack, accused Pakistan of sheltering its leader, CNN said.

In Peshawar, the commercial attache to the Iranian consulate, Heshmatollah Attarzadeh-Niyaki, was kidnapped last year.
