SEOUL, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- A South Korean college instructor has been charged with spying for North Korea for the past 17 years, prosecutors said.
The 37-year-old teacher, identified only as Lee, is accused of providing North Korea with military secrets in exchange for $50,600, South Korea's The Chosen Ilbo newspaper reported Friday.
Prosecutors said Lee was allowed to attend and record South Korean intelligence briefings while serving as a member of the National Unification Advisory Council.
Lee is charged with delivering military operation manuals and information on the locations of military facilities to a North Korean intelligence agent named Li Jin-u.
Prosecutors said the agent recruited Lee while Lee was a student at the University of Delhi. Lee then made two unauthorized trips to North Korea where he formally joined the North Korean Workers Party, prosecutors said.
