LONDON, Ontario, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Video footage of five Canadian police officers struggling to arrest an allegedly disturbed student at the University of Western Ontario created a media storm.
Since being recorded Wednesday night, the YouTube Internet video-sharing site recorded more than 30,000 views of the 90-second taped incident in which the police officers grappled to restrain the unidentified fourth-year student, the London (Ontario) Free Press reported Friday.
The video shows the student being punched, kicked and hit with a baton by university and city police officers at least 35 times, the newspaper said.
However, Gitta Kulczycki, the university's vice president of operations, said the video only showed one side of the incident.
"The concern was very much for our faculty and staff and students and, in fact, that individual," she said "They were trying to restrain the individual in order to be able to handcuff (him)."
London Police Chief Murray Faulkner said university police asked for assistance to help arrest the man "who was in an extreme state of anxiety."
No injuries were reported.
The student was taken to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation, the report said.
