Libyan man arrested after Italy blast

MILAN, Italy, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- A Libyan man has been arrested for allegedly setting off an explosive device at an Italian police barracks, officials said Monday.

Milan Prosecutor Armando Spataro told reporters that the man, identified as 34-year-old Mohamed Game, has no record of terrorism links and the episode is being treated as an isolated incident, the Italian news agency ANSA reported.

Spataro reportedly said that while the blast was "a very serious incident," it is also one that "should not be emphasized."

"As far as we know it was an isolated act by a person who has no record (of terrorist activity)," an unnamed police source told ANSA.

Authorities said Game lost a hand, was blinded in one eye and sustained severe burns when he ignited a device he was carrying in a tool box. Police said the Libyan had tried to enter the Carabinieri barracks but detonated the device at the entrance when guards pointed their machine guns at him.

ANSA said a 20-year-old Carabiniere suffered "very slight" injuries when he was hit in the hand.

Bomb experts told the news agency the explosive device looked to have been fashioned from large fireworks.
