Moments from the 129th Tournament of Roses parade (22 images)
Thousands lined the streets of Pasadena, Calif., for the annual Tournament of Roses parade on New Year's Day 2018. The flower-filled floats targeted the theme "Making a Difference." Fans from the two college football teams participating in the Rose Bowl national championship playoff game were among the crowd: Georgia and Oklahoma. Earth, Wind & Fire performed. The parade started in 1890 as a way to promote Pasadena's distinguished Valley Hunt Club but it soon became a means to display local fresh flowers. To this day the floats are built by volunteers, though most are built by professional float building companies and take almost a year to construct. Photos by Jim Ruymen/UPI
