Memorial to slain Charlottesville activist Heather Heyer (10 images)

Mourners wrote messages and left flowers on August 17, 2017, at the spot where an activist was killed during protests in Charlottesville, Va., the weekend before. Heather Heyer, a 32-year-old paralegal, was part of a group of protesters hit when a man plowed his car into them. Several others were injured.

James Alex Field, Jr., has been arrested in the case. Described as a Nazi sympathizer, he was on the scene of the planned "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, organized to protest the removal of a Confederate statue. Heyer was among the counter-protesters.
