LAPD shooting: Detectives injured in Los Angeles ambush

Two undercover Los Angeles detectives were ambushed by an unidentified gunman when they returned to a Mid-City police station on Tuesday morning, NBC Los Angeles reported.

LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith described the incident to reporters:

They were undercover officers working the burglary task force here out of the Wilshire station. They pulled up to the front of the gate and as they were opening the gate, from directly behind them, somebody for some reason opened fire on their car, striking it many times.

Both men were sent to the hospital with minor injuries, and released later in "good spirits," according to the Los Angeles Times.

As police departments across the city strengthened security, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck called the shooting "a blatant attempt to assassinate two of the people who protect this community."

CBS 2 reported that officials detained 10 men for questioning who have since been cleared of wrongdoing. Another person of interest is still at large.
