Feb. 21 (UPI) -- Elon Musk's private security detail was reportedly deputized by the U.S. Marshals Service, giving it extra rights while on federal property while he performs work for the Department of Government Efficiency.
An unspecified numer of members of Musk's security detail were deputized, ABC News, CBS News and CNN reported citing sources familiar to the matter.
The scope of rights granted to Musk's team after teh move was also not specified but one of the typical benefits of having a deputized team is that they can now be armed on federal property, something that was a hurdle for Musk's team.
"While we are not able to comment on the specifics of our protective operations, Secret Service protocols strictly prohibit private security services from being armed within the Treasury Building, Eisenhower Executive Office Building, or the White House," Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi told CBS News.
Some pointed to new threats toward Musk as he carried out his duties with DOGE for the need of heightened security. Usually, those who are connected to other law enforcement agencies are deputized by the U.S. Marshal's Office.
Most recently, the U.S. Marshals deputized a team protecting Dr. Anthony Fauci because of the threats against while working under the Biden administration.
Musk, the tech billionaire who owns Tesla and SpaceX, does not have Secret Service protection as he works on DOGE projects as assigned by President Donald Trump.
