The department said the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been called to investigate.

Authorities said that two planes collided in midair, and the FAA reported one aircraft is a Lancair kit aircraft carrying two passengers while the other is a Cessna 172 private aircraft carrying two passengers.

The Marana Regional Airport, also known as the Marana Northwest Regional Airport, is a small general aviation airport about 13 miles from Tucson. The city of Marana has owned the facility for more than two decades after purchasing it from Pima County.

According to information from the city, the airport is home to about 260 aircraft. The airport had more than 90,000 take-offs and landings in 2014 and caters to small aircraft, with its longest runway extending 6,901 feet.
