Dec. 14 (UPI) -- One person is dead and another in custody after a shooting Saturday at Fort Eisenhower in Georgia. The shooting took place in the on-post housing area of the military base, military officials said on Facebook.
An active shooter alert prompted a lockdown early Saturday morning at the base located southwest of Augusta, Ga.
Some on-base events were canceled and an alert was issued on local radio stations.
Officials gave the all-clear at approximately 9:45 a.m. EST.
"Fort Eisenhower was locked down this morning due to an active shooter," the base said in the Facebook statement.
"No information regarding the victim will be released until next-of-kin notification takes place. The suspect is currently in custody and Army CID is actively investigating alongside state and federal partners. The incident appears to be isolated."
Originally named Fort Gordon, U.S. Army Garrison Fort Eisenhower was built in 1941 and is currently home to the U.S. Army Signal Corps and U.S. Army Cyber Command, in addition to other units.
In 2022, the Congressional Naming Commission recommended the installment's name be changed along with several other U.S. military facilities named for Confederate leaders.
